New Balance 550, revival of a classic

The New Balance brand was created in 1906 by Boston shoemaker William J. Rileya. He had an ambition to help people with foot problems, which he did by developing orthopedic insoles that provided better support for the arch of the foot.

The brand first became internationally known in the 1960s when it decided to enter the running shoe industry. Following the success of running shoes like the New Balance 990 from 1982, New Balance decided in 1989 to start producing basketball sneakers with a premium leather construction and rubber sole. This led to the launch of their iconic New Balance 550 model, which was designed by Steven Smith.

When the New Balance 550 shoes were first launched back in 1989, they weren't an immediate success. In fact, it took almost three decades before the world finally caught wind of these sneakers.

Teddy Santis, the founder of fashion brand Aimé Leon Dore, found a picture of some New Balance 550 sneakers in an old catalog and saw great potential for a relaunch of these now iconic sneakers. The relaunch took place in 2020 as part of the collaboration with Aimé Leon Dore for the Uniform Program collection.

Later, New Balance entered into a collaboration with sports agent Rich Paul, releasing the New Balance 550 X Rich Paul model with cream and sky blue tones, giving the sneaker a retro style that pays homage to its predecessor from the 1980s.

Since then, New Balance 550 sneakers have only grown in popularity.
