The story of New Balance

New Balance was founded way back in 1906 by Boston shoemaker William J. Rileya. Rileya had the ambition to help people with foot problems by developing orthopedic insoles that provided better arch support.

The brand first gained international popularity in the 1960s when they started making running shoes. Their most famous running shoe was launched in 1982, the New Balance 990 , which was one of the most expensive shoes on the market at the time. This also made the shoes highly sought after and something of a status symbol.

The New Balance 990 model experienced great popularity, especially for its innovative design, which incorporated stability, support and flexibility into one shoe. The technology behind this model started all the way back in 1978, so New Balance spent four years on research and development before they could launch the shoes.

Since 1982, the 990 model has seen several relaunches as New Balance has found new and more innovative technologies within shoe design. Today, however, the shoes are at least as popular for their beautiful design as they are for their eminent comfort.
